Welcome to Roots

a holistic and evidence-based approach to language & literacy intervention

Meet Dr.
Elizabeth H. Stehling

With a doctorate in speech language pathology, specializing in language, literacy and learning development, my purpose is to provide holistic, compassionate, and empathetic care while advocating for the needs of those I work with. I continuously strive to enhance my knowledge and skills to ensure the best possible outcomes for my clients.

The Roots Approach

I believe in unlocking the potential of every learner through personalized, engaging, and multi-sensory sessions. I aim to instill a love for reading while providing the tools and support necessary for literacy success. If you're searching for an interventionist who provides personalized sessions that cater to the unique learning styles of each individual and delivers evidence-based instruction rooted in the Science of Reading and Structured Literacy, you've come to the right place!

Literacy is Language
Language is Literacy

Language is the foundation of literacy; literacy is the highest form of language. Roots provides language-intensive intervention while directly teaching your child to read, bridging the gap between language development and reading skills.

Understanding
Reading Difficulties

There are many reasons a child might find reading difficult, including gaps in foundational skills, challenges with language development, learning disabilities like dyslexia, teaching methods that don’t align with their learning style, or even low self-confidence.

At Roots, I take a holistic approach to supporting children with reading difficulties. This means looking at the whole child—their strengths, challenges, and unique way of learning—to address the root causes of their struggles.

While I’m trained in a variety of evidence-based reading programs, including Orton-Gillingham, I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all method. Every child is unique, and their journey to becoming a confident reader should reflect that. My goal is to provide personalized, compassionate support that helps your child grow strong, foundational skills and unlock the joy of reading. My primary focus is to teach your child how to read, so they can confidently transition to reading to learn.

Just like planting a seed and nurturing it with everything it needs to thrive, I’ll help your child’s reading skills take root and blossom into a lifelong love of learning.

Comprehensive
Evaluations

We don't know where to go if we don't know where to begin. Having your child undergo a thorough and comprehensive evaluation can help identify the root cause of an issue.

  • An evaluation typically involves a comprehensive assessment to understand your child's strengths and areas of need in language and literacy. This process may include formal testing, observations, and input from you as a parent and their teacher. An evaluation can be beneficial if you're noticing difficulties in reading, writing, or communication that might require targeted support. If you're unsure whether an evaluation is necessary, feel free to reach out for a consultation to discuss your child's specific needs.

  • Yes, I am trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach, which is a research-based method for teaching reading and spelling. I integrate this method into my practice along with other evidence-based strategies, ensuring that every intervention is tailored to meet the specific needs of each child.
